The MLB trade deadline always brings intrigue, and this summer will be no different. Teams begin jockeying for particular players who might be available in an effort to take their roster from also-ran to playoff contender.
The Cincinnati Reds are in a bit of a pickle at the moment. The team has hovered around .500 all season, and while selling off some expiring contracts might be wise, the Reds aren't out of the playoff picture just yet. Adding around the fringes might be enough to push Cincinnati from a middling ball club into a postseason threat.
It remains to be seen who Cincinnati might pursue (or trade away) before the July 31 deadline, but a handful of former Reds players are likely to be available. Whether or not Cincinnati makes a play to bring any such player back to the Queen City remains to be seen, but nevertheless, these three former Reds will likely be moved at the MLB trade deadline.
3 former Reds players quietly gaining buzz before MLB trade deadline
Aroldis Chapman, Boston Red Sox pitcher
Former Reds fireballer Aroldis Chapman is having another terrific season. The longtime Reds closer is operating out of the Boston Red Sox bullpen this season and is putting fantastic numbers once again. It's quite likely that this will be the second time in three seasons that Chapman is dealt to a contender.
In 2023, the Texas Rangers acquired Chapman part of as June trade with the Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox may be looking to sell this season, despite the offseason acquisitions of Walker Buehler and Alex Bregman. If Boston is out of contention at the deadline, look for Chapman to be wearing a different uniform in August.
Eugenio Suárez, Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman
Former Reds fan-favorite Eugenio Suárez could be on the move this summer. Geno is no stranger to being traded after playing for three different teams over the past five seasons. Given the Arizona Diamondbacks' injury concerns, Suárez could be traded once again before July's deadline.
Suárez is a right-handed hitting power-bat that numerous GMs will have their eyes on this summer. With 19 home runs heading into play on Friday, Geno's already looking to surpass his total from last season (30). Given the lack of production Cincinnati has received from third base this season, don't be shocked if the Reds' kick the tires on a potential reunion with the former All-Star.
Tyler Mahle, Texas Rangers pitcher
Tyler Mahle is one of the best pitchers in baseball this season — who saw that coming, huh? The Texas Rangers hurler is now more than a year removed from Tommy John surgery and showing the type of talent that saw the Minnesota Twins sacrifice two top prospects (Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand) at the 2022 trade deadline.
The Rangers, much like the Reds, are struggling to stay in playoff contention. With Mahle on an expiring contract, Texas could look to move the right-hander prior to the July 31 deadline.
