The Cincinnati Reds front office has said that the team will be buyers at the trade deadline. One name to look at should be New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard.

The Cincinnati Reds pitching staff has, without question, been the highlight of the 2019 season. Unfortunately several pitchers on the roster have deals that will be expiring at the end of the season, assuming none of them sign contract extensions. It’s time for the Reds to investigate bringing Noah Syndergaard to the Queen City.

Several Reds pitchers who are pending free agents, including Tanner Roark, have pitched well enough to warrant an extension. If the Cincinnati Reds front office has no intention of doing so, they should be looking to add some strong arms to their roster for next year. One pitcher the front office could look at trading for is New York Mets right-handed ace Noah Syndergaard.

In 19 games this season, Thor has a 7-4 record with a 4.36 ERA. He’s averaging roughly one strikeout per inning, having thrown 119.2 innings and struck out 118 batters and has only given up only 14 home runs this season.

Syndergaard also almost single-handedly beat the Reds when the Mets defeated Cincinnati earlier this season at Citi Field. Syndergaard pitched a complete game shut out and was responsible for hitting the home run that would end up being the only run scored by either team that day.

Roark and Alex Wood, will both be entering free agency when the 2019 comes to a close. With All-Star pitchers Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray likely returning, there will be three spots in the starting rotation in question. Adding a pitcher at the caliber of Syndergaard would likely secure the Reds as one of the premiere rotations in all of baseball for the 2020 season.

Add to that talent, the wizardry of Derek Johnson, and a trio of Castillo, Gray, and Syndergaard would give any lineup fits. Johnson has been an incredible help to the Reds pitching staff this season. He has made a huge difference in pitchers like Robert Stephenson and Amir Garrett, as well as honing Castillo’s skills, helping him become the team’s ace. I can only imagine what he could do with Syndergaard.

Unfortunately, Syndergaard is already very good and will likely come with a huge price tag in any trade. I would imagine the Reds would probably have to offer up at the very least an outfielder such as Jesse Winker, probably a bullpen arm like Michael Lorenzen, and a top prospect like Jonathan India.

I wouldn’t be opposed to them making a deal like this at all. Syndergaard will not enter free agency until 2022, so he would be around for the long haul, something the Reds really need to look for right now. It’s not time for another rebuild, this team needs to land a big fish.

If the Cincinnati Reds move the right players, trading for Noah Syndergaard could be a huge addition to the team for the foreseeable suture. Obviously the Reds have had a tough go of it in 2019, but having an arm like Thor’s in your rotation to finish out the season could end up being a huge push for the Reds to make a run at climbing out of the NL Central basement.
