Cincinnati Reds: No major moves as Winter Meetings roll on

As the sun rises in Las Vegas on Tuesday morning, the Cincinnati Reds have yet to make any major moves at the Winter Meetings.

If you’re like me, you’re checking various media outlets, keeping tabs on your Twitter feed, and constantly waiting for that alert on your phone that reads, “The Cincinnati Reds finally got the pitching.” Well, to this point during the 2018 Winter Meetings, the Reds have made little to no noise.

Okay, the Reds did pick up a left-handed pitcher off waivers from the Boston Red Sox yesterday. Robby Scott, who played college ball for the Florida State Seminoles, was snagged off waivers and is now part of the Reds 40-man roster. He’ll likely compete for a spot in the bullpen with the likes of Cody Reed, Brandon Finnegan, and Matt Wisler.

But, as far as major moves go, there’ve been some rumors, but no real action when it comes to what the Reds have done thus far at the Winter Meetings. To be fair, no other teams have made an earth-shattering transaction either.

The rumors were swirling quickly yesterday morning with talk of the Cincinnati Reds shopping All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett. Those rumors were quickly squashed by Reds beat reported Mark Sheldon, who’s source says that the Reds are not actively looking to trade Gennett.

I wouldn’t read too much into either side of those rumors, as the Reds should be compelled to listen should the right deal come along. However, it’s safe to assume that Cincinnati is not “looking” for a trade partner for Scooter.

One of the more interesting revelations in regards to the Reds at the Winter Meetings yesterday involved Yankees’ pitcher Sonny Gray. The Reds have been rumored to be interested in Gray for several weeks now, but the apparent asking price of the Yankees seems out of the realm of possibilities.

It was reported yesterday that the New York Yankees wanted the Reds’ No. 2 prospect, Taylor Trammell, in exchange for Gray. I almost had to laugh out loud when I read the report because there is no way that Cincinnati would even entertain the idea of trading Trammell for Gray.

Gray is coming off a season that saw his ERA reach 4.90. He’s also in the final year of arbitration eligibility and is likely due to make over $9 million next year. Taylor Trammell is the real deal folks. He’s still about a year away, but when he makes it to the big leagues, Trammell is going to be big time. The Reds know that, and it’s highly unlikely that Cincinnati will move him for any player, much less a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher like Gray.

With Tuesday now upon us, Reds fans are hopeful for some action that sees the Reds land either A.J. Pollock or Dallas Keuchel, or swing a trade for Corey Kluber. Who knows what’s in store for the Cincinnati Reds today? What I do know is that Reds’ fans will be glued to their smartphones and social media today in anticipation of that BIG move.
