Reds rumors: Noah Syndergaard on the Cincinnati Reds radar

The most recent Reds rumors comes from the New York Post. Joel Sherman says that the Cincinnati Reds are one of the teams to have shown interest in acquiring Noah Syndergaard.

Could Noah Syndergaard soon find his way to the Queen City. The latest Reds rumors claim that the Cincinnati Reds are one of two teams to have shown interest in acquiring Syndergaard via trade. Thor, as he’s affectionately known, would be a huge get for the Reds, but it would also cost them a pretty penny.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres are two of the teams that have shown interest in trading for the New York Mets starter Noah Syndergaard. Sherman also suggests that the Tampa Bay Rays may be interested in Syndergaard’s services as well.

The Cincinnati Reds, no doubt, have plethora of prospects that would interest the Mets. With David Wright‘s recent retirement, New York is definitely looking to address the void he left at third base. I’m sure a player like Reds’ prospect Nick Senzel would be high on the list if New York and Cincinnati were to enter into negotiations.

Austin Jackson, the Mets’ centerfielder last season is now a free agent and he’s not expected to return to the team. Might New York look to replace him with a player like Scott Schebler and several top-level prospects like Hunter Greene, Tyler Stephenson, or Shed Long?

Brodie Van Wagenen is the new Mets general manager. The former player agent, not turned GM used to represent Syndergaard when he was part of Creative Artists Agency (CAA). Van Wagenen is calling the shots now for the Mets, and it appears as though one of his first orders of business is to gauge the market for his former client.

Syndergaard would be the big-time move that every fan of the Cincinnati Reds is dying to see happen. Syndergaard is under team control through 2021 and has been nothing but dominant since coming up to the Major Leagues. Last season, Thor went 13-4 with a 3.03 ERA, 155 strikeouts, and an ERA+ of 121.

Syndergaard has not been the epitome of health throughout his career. He started only 25 games last season and just 7 the season before. If Cincinnati was going to make a trade for Syndergaard, they’re hoping to get the same player that dominated hitters in 2016 to the tune of 155 ERA+ and 2.29 FIP while only allowing 11 home runs in 30 starts.

If the Reds hope to land Syndergaard, you can bet it’ll cost them a lot. Some combination of Senzel, Greene, or Taylor Trammell might be necessary in order for the Reds and Mets to complete a trade. For me, if landing Syndergaard meant giving up just one of their Top 3 prospects, I’m all in. However, if trading for Thor means two of those player have to be involved, count me out.

So, the latest Reds rumors have the team chasing after one of the best young pitchers in the game. Will the Cincinnati Reds make the trade happen or will they come up empty-handed? Stay tuned.
