The former All-Star catcher for the Cincinnati Reds has another season ended by a relatively freak injury.

This time the Cincinnati Reds lost their All-Star catcher to a foot fracture.  Out three to six weeks this time of year is the death knell for an MLB season.  Devin Mesoraco will not be back on the field in Cincinnati this season.

Since his All-Star season of 2014, Mesoraco hasn’t finished a season healthy.  He had hip injury, a shoulder injury, and now a foot injury.  This time he was hit by a pitch when batting.

Mesoraco is a hope of what could have been.  He was  a young player, drafted and developed by the Reds.  With a large contract and a set of injuries Mesoraco has become an albatross.

Recently, it was asked if Mesoraco will be alright, but the question to ask is whether he will ever play again.  This charade must stop as Mesoraco does not and cannot stay healthy.

The Reds thought they had gamed the system when they signed the young catcher to a reasonable contract.  Instead, the system gamed the Reds as Mesoraco continues to eat up a roster spot and contract money year after year.  What is worse for a team like the Reds is that they are unable to plan for the future because there is a big question mark where Mesoraco and to a certain extent their catching position is at moving forward.

The Cincinnati Reds need an extra strategy for Devin Mesoraco, but the foot injury may have ruined that.

Mesoraco seems like a perfect fit for the Houston Astros.  They are a young team that needs a catcher with a little pop next year.  They have been making things work with mostly Brian McCann and Evan Gattis this season.

For a healthy catcher and an offensive upside, the Astros would have been willing to send some young talent.  The Reds are in position to eat some salary or send some international pool money the other way.  Mesoraco’s injury shuts that door down quickly.

Mesoraco may not want to face it, but this may be the end.  He has only played in 95 games in the last three seasons.  Those games haven’t been that great.

Mesoraco was a first round draft pick by the Reds.  He was an All-Start catcher.  Right now he is a risk to his health after baseball.

No one wants to see a young player retire early.  Whatever is going on with Mesoraco though is scary.  It’s time to hang up the cleats and focus on the good life.
