Cincinnati Reds land five prospects in MLB’s top 100
After beginning a rebuild with little talent in the minors, the Cincinnati Reds new have five of baseball’s top 100 prospects.
The Cincinnati Reds have five of baseball’s top 100 prospects somewhere in their system. The Reds’ five are Nick Senzel, Hunter Greene, Taylor Trammell, Luis Castillo, and Tyler Mahle. Castillo is with the big league team, while the rest have yet to make their MLB debuts.
The Reds picked Senzel in the first round of the draft in 2016. He was taken second overall from Tennessee as a third baseman. He is the 11th ranked prospect in all of baseball right now.
Hunter Greene is the new thing this season. The Reds drafted him with the second overall pick out of high school. He could end up either being Senzel’s partner on the left side of the infield or a Dwight Gooden like pitcher if he can continue to develop his curve.
The Reds used their second pick in the 2016 draft on outfielder Taylor Trammell. He is a five tool player that has yet to settle on a position. He appears like an elite left fielder, but he may end up in center.

Tyler Mahle is the fast riser of the year. Mahle has thrown a no-hitter each of the last two years. He is now pitching in Louisville and is just an injury or two away from the big leagues.

Luis Castillo has risen up the ranks for the Cincinnati Reds, since arriving from the Miami Marlins.
Castillo came over in the Dan Straily deal with Austin Brice and Isaiah White. The Reds expected him to stay in Double-A this season. Instead, Castillo has performed the best of all of the rookie starters since Amir Garrett fell apart.
MLB.com has Castillo ranked 79th, one spot beyond Trammell.
In the measure of who is better for the Reds this year, Castillo is light years ahead of the rest. Of all of these prospects, he is the only one in Cincinnati this year.
Castillo is 2-4 in eight starts this year for the big league club. He has 51 strikeouts in 48 innings, averaging six innings per start. Castillo’s biggest issue this year is home runs, as he allowed seven in his first eight games.
