The Cincinnati Reds had to scramble to find a replacement for Amir Garrett with Cody Reed and Rookie Davis in Louisville.

The Cincinnati Reds sent both Rookie Davis and Cody Reed down to Louisville in order to lengthen them out.  Davis was throwing too many pitches, while Reed was coming in from the bullpen.  Both are getting ready to be in the Reds’ rotation at some point this season.

Davis pitched in five games going 1-2 for the Reds before being sent down to Triple-A.  He only had 15 strikeouts in 19 innings, averaging under four innings per start.  With a WHIP over 2.00, Davis needed to re-establish himself as a starter.

Reed, meanwhile, spent the beginning of the season in the bullpen with the man to whom his development is linked, Robert Stephenson, for the Reds where he was successful.  He made one bad spot start and returned to the bullpen.  Now Reed is in Louisville pitching for the Bats with the hopes of returning to the Reds. They just need to settle on a plan for Reed.

Besides these two, the other primary option would have been Stephenson.  He has been the long man in the Reds’ bullpen all season long.  He hasn’t earned it, though, with multiple rough outings in the pen.

Many of the fans wanted to see the debut of Luis Castillo.  He came over from the Miami Marlins in the Dan Straily.  He has dominated Pensacola, but isn’t developed enough to warrant the promotion.

Asher Wojciechowski became the Cincinnati Reds’ choice when they didn’t have anywhere else to go.

The Blue Jays drafted Asher Wojciechowski.  He was then traded to the Houston Astros in the J.A. Happ deal in 2012.  He made his MLB debut with the Astros in 2015 pitching five games including 3 starts.

Wojciechowski hadn’t pitched in the big leagues since then.  He pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks in spring training.  Arizona released him and the Louisville Bats signed him once they knew that they would need more starting pitching.

He made five starts for the Louisville Bats going 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA.  The Reds re-called him May 20 to help the bullpen.  He pitched two games in relief, allowing 1 run in 4 innings.

In eight years 131 of the 28-year old’s 142 minor league appearances have been starts.  He has a minor league record of 49-35.  Also, unlike the Reds’ homegrown talent, he average well over five innings per minor league appearance.

Whether Wojciechowski stays in the rotation once Amir Garrett returns or not, the Reds need him to provide innings.  Injuries have hit the Reds hard in their starting rotation all season long.  Hopefully, Wojciechowski can break that trend.
