The Cincinnati Reds’ five game winning streak comes to a crashing stop as the Bronx Bombers crushed the hometown team.

The New York Yankees ended the Cincinnati Reds five-game winning streak last night with a 10-4 thumping behind a balanced hitting attack.  Seven of the eight position players in the Yankees starting lineup notched RBI on the night, including two each from Brett Gardner, Gary Sanchez, and Didi Gregorius.

Rookie Davis struggled for the third time in five starts, while allowing five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings for the Reds.  He entered the game with a ghastly 7.36 ERA, and against all odds saw that number rise to 7.58 in the loss.   With the aid of the inaccurate Angel Hernandez strike zone, Davis struggled with control throughout the game.  He walked three batters, bringing his season total to13 walks in just 19 innings pitched this season.  The loss, coupled with a fourth straight win for the St. Louis Cardinals, dropped the Reds to second place in the NL Central.

Quick Hits

Stat of the Game: 193 pitches for Reds pitchers, against 134 pitches for Yankees pitchers.  Despite a baffling strike zone from home plate umpire, Angel Hernandez, and despite facing a pitcher in Masahiro Tanaka, who primarily throws breaking pitches that wind up outside of the zone, the Reds were their usual free-swinging selves.  Tanaka walked just one batter in seven innings, while Reds pitchers combined for seven free passes.

Cincinnati Reds MVP: Joey Votto – perennial NL MVP candidate Joey Votto continued his hot home stand by going 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI on the night.  His 2-run homer in the seventh was his 10th of the season, and made the score 7-4.  Furthermore, he hit his 10th home run of the season a full month later last season.

Turning Point:  Tanaka let the Reds get themselves out for most of the game. He also masterfully avoided trouble a couple of times early on.  In the fourth the Reds had the bases loaded with no outs and Jose Peraza coming to bat.

Peraza promptly swung at Tanaka’s first pitch slider and popped the ball up on the infield.  Finally, Tucker Barnhart followed with an easy double play to end the inning after working a full count on Tanaka.

Play of the game: Brett Gardner’s two-run homer in the eighth was final nail in the coffin on this one.  Votto homered in the previous inning.  That injected some hope in the Reds chances however the immediate answer came from Gardner.  That was the homer that took the life out of the Reds.
