10 former Reds who were traded at the deadline (including 1 who never should've left)

The 2026 MLB trade deadline is in the books, and the Cincinnati Reds did little to improve their fortunes heading into 2027. The Reds did even less to improve their playoff odds this season.

But several other organizations actually made moves on Monday. Cincinnati's deadline deals with the Cleveland Guardians and St. Louis Cardinals hardly moved the needle, but a number of former Reds were on the move yesterday.

Let's look at all 10 former Reds who were traded before the deadline, including one who fans undoubtedly wish was still with the organization.

Kevin Gausman, RHP - traded from the Blue Jays to the Cubs

Kevin Gausman had a short stint in Cincinnati back in 2019. Since that time, he's turned himself into a two-time All-Star and is now back in the NL Central after the Chicago Cubs swung a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays to acquire the veteran right-hander.

Luis Castillo, RHP - traded from the Mariners to the White Sox

Former Reds ace Luis Castillo was traded to the Seattle Mariners at the 2022 deadline, and he's now on the move once again. La Piedra will be counted on to help lead the Chicago White Sox back to the postseason after being shipped to the South Siders late last week.

Luke Weaver, RHP - traded from the Mets to the Pirates

Luke Weaver spent an uneventful season in Cincinnati back 2023. After his release, Weaver latched on with the New York Yankees. The right-hander acted as the Yankees closer the past two seasons before heading to Queens last winter. The New York Mets traded Weaver to the Pittsburgh Pirates at this year's deadline, so the Reds are sure to see plenty of him next season.

Sammy Stafura, SS - traded from the Pirates to the Mets

Ironically, the Mets landed former Reds prospect Sammy Stafura in exchange for Weaver. If there's one player on this list that Reds fans would like to have back in the organization, it's Stafura. Not only has Stafura been one of the hottest hitters in all the minor leagues this season, but he was shipped to Pittsburgh last summer in the trade that brought Ke'Bryan Hayes to Cincinnati. That's a deal the Reds would love to have back.

Jeff Hoffman, RHP - traded from the Blue Jays to the Twins

Jeff Hoffman had a successful stint in the Reds bullpen from 2021-2022 and then became an All-Star with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024. Last season, however, was a down-year for Hoffman, and he's put up disappointing numbers again in 2026. Nevertheless, the Blue Jays found a taker, and Hoffman's now off to the Land of 10,000 Lakes as the Minnesota Twins are looking to make a postseason push.

Andrew Moore, RHP - traded from the Padres to the Pirates

Andrew Moore is a name most Reds fans might not remember. He was part of the return package from the Castillo trade with Mariners in 2022, but never made it to the big leagues with the Reds. He spent the past two seasons in the San Diego Padres minor league system, and is now set to return to the NL Central as part of the Pirates' bullpen makeover.

Brent Suter, LHP - traded from the Angels to the Braves

Cincinnati native Brent Suter is on his way to his third team in two years after being traded to the Atlanta Braves. Suter was part of the Reds' bullpen from 2024-2025 and signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels this past offseason. The southpaw will now be leaned on to help bolster the Braves' bullpen for the final two months of the season.

Rece Hinds, OF - traded from the Marlins to the Orioles

The Reds DFA'd Rece Hinds earlier this season, and the Miami Marlins picked him up. He obviously didn't impress the Fish, because they flipped him at this year's deadline for cash considerations.. Since that trade, he played in just one Major League game for Miami, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout. The Baltimore Orioles are now charged with the tall task of fixing Hinds' swing.

Ben Rortvedt, C- traded from the Mets to the Dodgers

The demand for catchers at this year's deadline was said to be high, but the Reds were unable to find a taker for Tyler Stephenson. Former Cincinnati catcher Ben Rortvedt, who was part of the Reds' offseason roster this past winter, is headed back to the Los Angeles Dodgers while they wait for Will Smith to get healthy.

Tyler Mahle, RHP - traded from the Giants to the Braves

Like Castillo, Tyler Mahle was moved at the 2022 trade deadline. He signed with the San Francisco Giants this past offseason, but is now on his way to join Suter in Atlanta. The Braves made an attempt to trade for Mahle's former teammate in Texas, Jacob deGrom, but their efforts fell short.
