The Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off blockbuster trade this past offseason that sent former first-round pick Gavin Lux to the Queen City while outfield prospect Mike Sirota was shipped out to LA. But the Dodgers also received the Reds' Competitive Balance pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, and selected outfielder Charles Davalan with the 41st pick on Sunday night. The Dodgers' selection of Davalan puts the final bow on the Lux trade from this past offseason.
Originally from Canada, Davalan spent the 2024 season with Florida Gulf Coast before transferring to the University of Arkansas last season. The 21-year-old hit .346/.433/.561 with the Razorbacks last season and smacked 14 homers to go along with 60 RBI.
Lux has endured an up-and-down first season in Cincinnati. Playing out of position early on while both Spencer Steer and Austin Hays were nursing injuries at the outset of the season, Lux looked like a key component of the Reds lineup during the first few months of his 2025 campaign.
Reds trade for Gavin Lux have been finalized after Dodgers draft pick
Lately, however, the former Dodgers' infielder has regressed and has become little more than a desiganted hitter for Terry Francona's club. Lux was hitting .292/.383/.401 with a 121 wRC+ through the end of May, but has posted a meager .206/.300/.320 slash line and 73 wRC+.
Meanwhile, Reds fans are wondering if Nick Krall made a mistake parting with Sirota this past offseason. After taking the Northeastern product in Round 3 of the 2024 MLB Draft, Sirota was kept off the minor league field last season. In 2025, however, Sirota is hitting .333/.452/.616 in 60 games split between the Dodgers' Low-A and High-A affiliates.
The Reds can officially close the book on the Gavin Lux trade, and while some fans may not like the long-term outlook of this transaction, Cincinnati was in need of a versatile left-handed bat following the Jonathan India trade last fall. Time will tell if the trade was indeed a win for the Reds or the Dodgers, but with both Sirota and Davalan still years away from the big leagues, those evaluations will have to wait.
