The Cincinnati Reds have started August much better than they played offensively in July.
After finishing July with one of the worst offensives in the majors, the Cincinnati Reds have one of the best offenses to start August. The Reds scored the fewest runs in the National League in July, but have scored the second most to start the month of August. This comes after a June in which the Reds ranked 20th in the majors in runs.
To start the month the Reds are leading all of baseball in home runs. The Los Angeles Dodgers are the only team to average more per game, at 2, than that Reds. This has helped the Reds lead the NL in slugging percentage, too.
The Reds are second in the NL in steals behind the Milwaukee Brewers, but stolen bases have not powered the run scoring. The Reds are last in the NL in stolen bases in August. Only the Tampa Bay Rays have fewer steals in all of baseball.

What the Reds have done is draw walks. They are second in MLB in walks to start August. Over the course of the season the Reds are exactly in the middle of all of MLB in walks offensively.
The Cincinnati Reds have too many issues with their pitching for their offense not be consistently great.

The other highlight to start the month for the Reds offensively is their batting average. Their .274 average is second in the NL for the month behind the Saint Louis Cardinals. That ranks the Reds fourth in MLB.
In July the Reds batted a lowly .228, worst in all of baseball. This follows a June when they ranked 18th in MLB in batting average. For the season they are 15th in batting average.
Of course, the side effect from all of this is an increase in RBIs. The Reds are second in MLB behind the Cardinals in August in RBIs. That’s after only beating out the Giants for RBIs in the month of July in the NL.
Looking at the talent on this team, it is no surprise that the team is having a good month. With All-Star Zack Cozart back from an injury the offense has taken off. First baseman Joey Votto is also hot in the second half.

The Reds had a difficult month of July offensively. There is no reason that the Reds shouldn’t have one of the better offenses for the rest of the year in the NL. That should also carryover to the 2018 season.
