Kemp, Bautista BBA’s Musial Picks

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp received the top nod for the National League’s Stan Musial Award as voted on by members of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance. The vote? Not even close. Kemp tallied all 15 first place votes. Blog Red Machine also voted for Kemp as its top selection. The top five in the BBA’s vote is identical to BRM’s.

No surprise Kemp won the honor considering the offensive season he put together. Kemp led the NL in runs scored (115), home runs (39), and total bases (353). Kemp also led all of baseball in RBI (126). He was only one homer shy of posting a 40/40 season as Kemp swiped 40 bags.

Here’s a breakdown of the vote…

Matt Kemp, Los Angeles (15) 195
Ryan Braun, Milwaukee 134
Prince Fielder, Milwaukee 83
Joey Votto, Cincinnati 79
Justin Upton, Arizona 77
Roy Halladay, Philadelphia 49
Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado 49
Albert Pujols, St. Louis 46
Jose Reyes, New York 42
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles 31
Lance Berkman, St. Louis 28
Dan Uggla, Atlanta 14
Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco 13
Cliff Lee, Philadelphia 11
Hunter Pence, Philadelphia 6
Michael Morse, Washington 5
Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati 3
Ian Kennedy, Arizona 2
Andrew McCutchen, Pittsburgh 2
Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado 1

Nice to see that the NL BBA members recognized Joey Votto’s season with a fourth place vote. He won the Musial last year and followed that up with a more than respectable 2011 campaign. Brandon Phillips also received mention among the voters.

The American League wasn’t quite the runaway, but Toronto’s Jose Bautista won the AL nod in gaining 11 of the 22 first place votes.

Jose Bautista, Toronto (11) 225
Jacoby Ellsbury, Boston (5) 200
