The Cincinnati Reds are on pace to set a few home run records in 2017 at the midpoint of the campaign.

The Cincinnati Reds are chasing three home run records that are historical for different reasons.  The offense is chasing the record for most home runs in a season and most home runs by a trio in the season.  The pitching staff is trying to avoid setting another record for the most home runs in a season.

First, let’s discuss the long ball in the room.  The Reds are on pace to obliterate the record they set last season for home runs allowed by a pitching staff in a single season.  It isn’t even close,

They set the record for most home runs allowed last season at 256.  Right now they are on pace to surrender an even 280.  This is just one year after setting the record, just one season.

Not only are they on pace to set the record again, but they are on pace to beat it by almost ten percent.  This sort of record shouldn’t be reset year after year,.  The Reds need to put the breaks on this anyway they can.

The next closest team is the Seattle Mariners and they are 14 home runs back.  The Reds are also in the National League where pitchers don’t hit as many home runs.  This is very concerning.

More from Reds News

At least the Cincinnati Reds are on pace to set a pair of offensive home run records around Joey Votto’s power surge.

The record chase that has gotten the most publicity is the most home runs hit by a trio of players in a single season.  The Reds set the current team record in 1970.  The number to hit is 119.

Right now Adam Duvall, Scott Schebler, and Joey Votto are on pace for 124 home runs.

Votto is aiming at 47 home runs, the most home runs of his career for a season, making this record highly attainable.  Schebler has to continue to play everyday for this to stay in play, though.

The record for total home runs is also in play.  The 2017 Reds are chasing the 2005 Reds and their 222 home runs.  Right now, the 2017 team is on pace to hit 230 dingers this season.  That is thanks to the trio above and the 13 hit by second baseman Scooter Gennett, including four in one game.

The Reds are hitting home runs and allowing home runs at a record pace.  Power like this is rarely seen in Cincinnati.  Hopefully, they can hit more and allow less during the second half of the season.
