Fitting since it was “Brandon Phillips Bobblehead Day at Great American Ball Park” (in my cheesiest announcer voice. You know the one. Yeah, that one)

I’d like to rehash a few of the happenings of today’s marathon game. My mind is like an A.D.D. strobe light so I will just present it in similar fashion if there are no objections. Anyone…? Good. Moving On.

Today’s game was absolutely maddening to watch. This year’s Marlins squad barely resembles a AA club at any given moment and the Reds could not put them away in regulation. Dusty’s hit-and-run call with Todd Frazier at the plate and Jay Bruce on first was comical. I learned an acronym last year that certain baseball writers use and it applies here. Allow me to share…TOOTBLAN (thrown out on the basepath like a nincompoop.) Yeah. That’s an actual thing. Hat tip to Scott Fendley, who I am certain is not reading this. Dusty’s call got Bruce TOOTBLAN’d. Bruce was chugging to second base like a team of Budweiser Clydesdales and was thrown out by a country mile. C’mon man…

Zack Cozart got a boo boo on his pointer and middle fingers during a bunt attempt when he broke the fundamental rule that little baseballers learn early in knot hole. Keep your fingers behind the bat when bunting. Early reports are that his X-rays were negative so no fractured phalanges for Mr. Cozart.

This game was just bizarre to me on so many levels.

Bronson Arroyo was stellar, then sketchy, then stellar. At the end of his day he trotted off the field with a quality start through eight innings of work. It was disappointing to watch him hang on and finish strong with such weak run support. The Reds stranded 17 runners. 17 LOB! That’s just nuts.

Today we saw the infamous Infield Fly Rule invoked and the swinging bunt executed perfectly. If you know a Braves fan, ask them about the ol’ Infield Fly Rule circa 2012.

Brandon Phillips’ strike zone got bigger every inning. The balls & strikes dummy behind the plate was absolutely wearing me out. At least he overruled the bad call at first when the first base umpire took a bad angle and blew a call. In my opinion it’s always better for the CORRECT call to be made, even when it goes against my beloved Reds.

Brook Jacoby needs a romantic weekend with a few of his hitters…

J.J. Hoover did not, I repeat, did NOT blow the game today; which is nice.

Shin-Soo Choo is ridiculous. Choo got on base six times today. Out of seven ABs. Three hits and three walks. Is he your favorite player yet? I mean, he’s no Votto, but he’s close, right? He’s got to be in your top three, right? How about his awkward 10 minute hug at home plate with Dat Dude? Choo is a hugger. I like that. I would hug it out with Choo. Not going to lie. I love his game. I also love his walk up song. Ball So Hard by Kanye West and Jay-Z. He balled so hard today. One word: Choo.

Joseph Daniel Votto went 4 for 6 today including a monster homerun early to give the Reds a 1-0 lead over the fish. I hope this puts to bed the talk of “is he back?” He had plenty of power in his legs and plenty of pop in his bat today. It appears that Joey is just fine.

Reds fans on Twitter hate the Wooooo.

There was also some Bobblehead controversy today.

Can I exchange my BP bobblehead if he looks light skinned and Dominican? #Reds

— Tyler Alonso (@TylerAlonso) April 20, 2013

What say you? Take another look at the picture atop this post. Did the fine folks at the Bobblehead Company do him proper justice?

They were supposed to be the top two bats in the Reds lineup for the 2013 season. In a sense, they still are. After an unfortunate shoulder separation to Ryan Ludwick, Brandon Phillips was once again moved to the cleanup spot in the batting order. Shin-Soo Choo, acquired in the off-season, was still sitting atop Dusty Baker’s lineup.

The anti-Dusty brigade might say at least Dusty did something right…

Apr 15, 2013; Cincinnati, OH, USA; Phillips throws to first to record an out during the second inning at Great American Ball Park.
No one can deny what the duo of Phillips and Choo have meant to the Reds even though we are a mere 13 games into the 2013 season. Save an early outburst from Todd Frazier and a one game homer spree from Zack Cozart, the Reds dynamic duo has provided the majority of the Reds offense.

With Joey Votto on pace to walk a mind-boggling 260 times (like that will actually happen), the Reds have needed to find offense from other sources. Sure, the bats have not been consistent – save BP and Choo.

Last night after BP singled home Derrick Robinson and Zack Cozart to provide the Reds a 4-2 lead, I tweeted this…

Where would these guys be without BP?

— Blog Red Machine (@blogredmachine) April 16, 2013

Not doing this toot my own horn either. It’s a question that seriously needs to be pondered. And no Reds fan should overlook the 13 games in which Choo has aided this team either.

See with your own eyes what Phillips has done in 2013…

triple slash of .340/.357/.660

leads team with 4 HR (T5th in NL), 16 RBI (2nd in NL) and in SLG (7th in NL)

held hitless in only 2 of 12 games played

tied for team lead in doubles with Jay Bruce (not Joey Votto as he’s walked so much) with 5

8 multi-hit games

RBI in 8 games

only 1 GIDP this season

Phillips has done all of his damage since Opening Day when he went hitless in 6 plate appearances.

Apr 15, 2013; Choo bunts during the eighth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Great American Ball Park. The Reds defeated the Phillies 4-2. (Photo Credit: Frank Victores-USA TODAY Sports)

As for Choo…

triple slash of .353/.476/.588

leads team in BA (9th in NL)

2nd on team in OBP (also 2nd in NL)

hitless in only 2 of 13 games, but on base in every game

multiple hits in 7 of 13 games

And there are these facts…

BP and Choo are tied for the team lead in hits (18)

BP and Choo are tied for the team lead in runs scored (11)

What some might find a little bizarre is this. According to Baseball Reference and Fangraphs, Phillips and Choo are 3rd and 4th on the team in regards to WAR. Of course what doesn’t help Choo was that two error game in St. Louis.

For the inquiring mind, Votto and ToddFather are ahead of Choo and BP on both.

I ask again, where would the Reds be without BP and Choo?

Most likely, not 6-7. Most likely, not even close.
