Starter Report: RHP Mat Latos vs RHP Jesse Hahn

The Cincinnati Reds look to continue the roll that they are on as they send Mat Latos to the mound on Monday night to take on his former team, the San Diego Padres. The Padres will counter with quick starting rookie Jesse Hahn.

Reds Starter: RHP Mat Latos

2014 Season Stats

Change Up 78 MPH 8%
Slider 87 MPH 17%
Curveball 77 MPH 13%

Mat Latos hasn’t reached his velocity peak yet, still sitting about 2 MPH lower than last season. Despite that, the results have been good as he has a 2.89 ERA in three starts. While it is early in the season for Latos, and we are looking at a small sample size, his fastball, slider and change up have all been above-average pitches this season, while his curveball has been average.

Padres Starter: RHP Jesse Hahn

Curveball 75 MPH 29%

Jesse Hahn is only making his fifth big league start on Monday night, but the first four have been quite strong. Despite overpowering stuff he has missed a lot of bats, and while his walk rate isn’t good, it hasn’t been bad either. Much like with Latos, we are working with a small sample size of pitches thrown in 2014, but he has been very successful with the curveball and the change up (when he throws it at least), while the fastball has been an average pitch. The slider, while not thrown often, has been a well below-average offering. Hahn hasn’t been stingy with walking batters, so the Reds may be able to be a bit more patient with him, but they will also want to avoid falling behind given how well his curveball has played.
