Pitch  Velocity  Usage

Cutter 89 MPH 19%
Curveball 78 MPH 10%

Alfredo Simon continues to be the surprise of the National League. His ten wins lead the league and his 3.05 ERA has been just as surprising from a pitcher who has spent the past few years in the bullpen. Simon hasn’t switched up his approach much throughout the season, with his monthly pitch selection varying very little by pitch. His fastball and cutter have both been above-average offering this season, while his curveball is slightly above-average. The splitter has been a below-average offering.

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 96 MPH 56%
Slider 86 MPH 20%
Cutter 94 MPH 12%
Spitter 86 MPH 11%

Despite his poor record, Jeff Samardzija has been one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2014. He has picked up velocity each month of the season thus far, averaging 96.2 MPH in June on his fastball and 95MPH on his cutter.  The fastball and slider are both above-average offerings, with the slider being well above-average. Despite the big velocity on his cutter, it’s been a below-average pitch in his career and 2014 is no different. His splitter has been slightly below-average. He will pound the strikezone, but if the Reds can take advantage of the cutter and splitter, they could have some success against the best that the Cubs have to offer.
