Mat Latos is making just his second start of the year for the Reds. In his first start his velocity didn’t match up with where he has been in the past, down about 3 MPH on average, so we will see where he is at in this start. Despite the fastball velocity being down, the slider velocity was up. He did use the fastball a bit less than he has in the past, but it wasn’t a big drop off. His first start was great as he pounded the strikezone and didn’t allow a walk with just two hits over six innings.

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 92 MPH 67%
Change Up 85 MPH 14%

Curveball 74 MPH 4%

The right hander has made just two starts this season for Toronto, spending the rest of his time dominating in Triple-A where he had a 1.92 ERA in 70.1 innings with just four walks and 54 strikeouts. In the minors he pounded the strikezone and that should be expected in the big leagues. He has struggled in limited action in the past at the big league level, going back to 2011. He doesn’t have swing and miss stuff, so the Reds should be able to put the ball in play just fine.
