Starter Report: LHP Hyun-jin Ryu vs RHP Johnny Cueto

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds will meet on Wednesday night. The Reds will look to get things going in the right direction by sending Johnny Cueto to the mound to oppose Dodgers lefty Hyun-jin Ryu.

Scouting Report

Pitch  Velocity  Usage
Fastball 95 MPH 51%
Change Up 85 MPH 17%
Cutter 90 MPH 20%
Slider 86 MPH 10%
Curveball 81 MPH 3%

Johnny Cueto continues to mix his pitches very well. He uses his fastball and cutter combo 71% of the time, and he has been increasing his usage of his 4-seam fastball and decreasing the use of his 2-seamer over the last month. His slider usage has dropped as well over the course of the season. He pounds the zone with all of his pitches, hardly walking hitters and has missed tons of bats this season.

Dodgers Starter: Hyun-jin Ryu

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 91 MPH 55%
Change Up 83 MPH 20%
Curveball 73 MPH 10%
Slider 83 MPH 15%

Ryu does a good job of mixing his pitches as well, using three different offspeed pitches at least 10% of the time. He pounds the strikezone, rarely offering a walk. His fastball and slider are well above-average pitches. The curveball is slightly above-average and his change up has been well below-average in 2014. It will be tough to pinpoint what is coming since he mixes things well, but if the Reds can identify the change up and take advantage of it like other teams have this season, it would likely be their best bet.
