Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 94 MPH 60%
Cutter 89 MPH 22%
Splitter 85 MPH 7%
Curveball 78 MPH 11%

In his last start, Alfredo Simon began throwing his splitter again, after hardly throwing it over the previous two starts. His curveball usage remained up after really picking up in his 3rd start of the year. He used the cutter at the lowest rate of the year, though it wasn’t far off the pace from the previous time out. He continues to be a surprise, mixing and matching better than a reliever would be expected to. He has become more and more reliant on the 4-seam fastball in each start as he has lowered the usage of his 2-seam fastball.

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 95 MPH 65%
Cutter 93 MPH 8%
Splitter 86 MPH 10%
Slider 85 MPH 17%

In his last start against Arizona, Samardzija had the best velocity of the year, averaging over 96 MPH on his fastball and 94 MPH on his cutter. Against the Reds on the 18th he used his slider 22% of the time, but only used it 8% of the time when he took the mound on the 23rd. He went to the fastball against the Reds just 59% of the time against the Reds, the second lowest of the season. In the starts that were before and following the game against the Reds he used the fastball 84% and 73% of the time. How he chooses to pitch the Reds will be interesting given how his pitch selection the first time around was vastly different than his seasonal averages.
