Johnny Cueto threw his fastball the least amount of the season in his last start, going to it just 37% of the time. He made up that difference by throwing his cutter a season high 25% of the time. He also threw his slider a season high 15% of the time. That last start was against the Pirates, so it will be interesting to see how he changes up his pitch selection this second time around.

This isn’t the same Edinson Volquez who was a Cincinnati Red. Volquez is now throwing his fastball much less often and mixing in his curveball a lot more often. The biggest difference, at least to this point in the season, is that Volquez is throwing strikes and not walking batters. He is also not missing as many bats as he used to. His strikeout rate has dropped every year since 2011, but so has his walk rate, though the walk rate was still very poor as recently as last season.
