Cincinnati Reds vs Chicago Cubs Pitching Match Up 4/20/14

The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs will play a third game on Sunday afternoon with the winner taking the series two games to one. Both teams will run out a starter who desperately needs a good start as Homer Bailey enters the game with an 8.16 ERA for the Reds and the Cubs will trot out Carlos Villanueva and his ERA of 11.57. The right handers will battle each other and hope that the wind isn’t blowing out.

Pitch  Velocity  Usage
Fastball 95 MPH 64%
Split Finger 86 MPH 9%
Slider 86 MPH 17%
Curveball 80 MPH 10%

Homer Bailey has used his fastball less and less each start this season, going from 73% in the first start to just 54% in his last start. He has struggled in giving up the home run, allowing a league leading six homers on the season including four in the last start. He has used his slider and split finger more in each start and lowered the usage of his curveball in each start. So far this season Bailey has thrown strikes, but he hasn’t been able to hit his spots within the zone at all, often leaving the ball over the middle of the plate.

Cubs Starter: RHP Carlos Villanueva

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 88 MPH 50%
Change Up 82 MPH 17%
Slider 83 MPH 16%
Curveball 75 MPH 17%

Villanueva has made four appearances on the season, with the last two coming out of the rotation where he has thrown eight inning. In the first start he allowed one run in five innings, but the last time out he gave up nine runs in three inning to the Cardinals. His fastball is a below-average pitch, though his two-seamer has had success in the past at times. His slider is the only above-average pitch he has, so look for it to be his go-to pitch with two strikes, as he has gone to it over 50% of the time in 2014 with two strikes on a hitter.
