The Cincinnati Reds make their first trip into Chicago on Friday afternoon to take on the Cubs for the first time this season. The Reds will send Alfredo Simon to the mound who has more than admirably filled in for Mat Latos in the rotation. The Cubs will counter with their best pitcher, right hander Jeff Samardzija.

Cutter 90 MPH 27%
Splitter 85 MPH 9%
Curveball 79 MPH 6%

In both starts Simon has relied on the fastball about the same, but he has mixed in his other pitches quite differently. In the first start he used his split finger quite often, but hardly used it the last time out. He threw the cutter about 50% more than he did the first time around.

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 95 MPH 65%
Slider 84 MPH 9%
Cutter 93 MPH 18%
Splitter 86 MPH 8%

In past years teams were able to have success against the fastball and cutter of Samardzija. He has been able to put hitters away with an above-average slider and solid splitter though. He does as his control does. If he can get ahead with strikes he has the weapons to put hitters away, but when he gets behind hitters and has to throw them fastballs they have been able to hit it.
