Pittsburgh Pirates vs Cincinnati Reds Pitching Match Up 4/15/14

The Reds will be playing more than one game today when they take the field against the Pittsburgh Pirates, finishing up the game from last night that was suspended in a 7-7 tie after what seemed like batting practice lasted until the game was suspended after the 6th inning. After that game is completed today, the originally scheduled game will take place with Mike Leake taking the mound for the Cincinnati Reds. The Pirates will counter with RHP Gerrit Cole.

Cutter 90 MPH 12%
Slider 81 MPH 6%
Curveball 80 MPH 19%

Mike Leake works often from his fastball and cutter combination. Over the first two starts he has worked Fastball/Cutter/Curveball at about the same rates, but in each game he relied on one of the change up and the slider as his 5th pitch and rarely on the other. Against the Mets he threw the change up often, barely using his slider and in the start against the Cardinals he barely threw the change up and relied on the slider.

Fastball 96 MPH 63%
Change Up 86 MPH 3%
Slider 86 MPH 13%
Curveball 84 MPH 21%

Pirates right hander Gerrit Cole has one of the fastest fastballs in baseball, averaging 96 MPH as a starter is unheard of and that is what he is doing right now. The pitch is above-average and helps generate plenty of groundballs. He will mix in an above-average slider, good curveball and solid change up. A well rounded pitcher with four good pitches who can throw strikes.
