Homer Bailey has struggled in his first two starts of the season, struggling some with control. He hasn’t used his split finger nearly as much as he did in 2013, dropping down to 4% this season from 13% in 2013. He has also throw his fastball more, basically swapping out the extra splitters from 2013 for fastballs here in 2014. It is just two starts, so it may even out rather quickly. Bailey has pitched better against the Pirates than just about anyone in his career, posting a 2.91 ERA in 102 innings with 90 strikeouts.

Peralta has struggled some this year, giving up three home runs in two starts. He is using his fastball much less so far in 2014, down from 60%, essentially making up the difference by adding the change up into the mix more than twice as often. He has been a good control pitcher over the past two seasons, though his strikeout rate has dropped off in those seasons as well.
