It is a good news/bad news situation in Cincinnati Reds land on Friday afternoon. The good news is that left handed closer Aroldis Chapman announced that he will begin throwing in the bullpen on Monday. The bad news is that Mat Latos had a bit of a setback.
Latos’ bullpen did not go well. Still has some tenderness in the flexor mass. He’ll have more treatment before throwing again. #reds

While it still doesn’t sound serious, it probably puts him out for another two weeks at least and that is something that the Reds weren’t planning on. Alfredo Simon did more than a good job in his first spot start for Latos and hopefully he can continue doing so, but this team is going to need Latos to pitch as soon as possible if they are going to compete for a playoff spot. The more time he misses, the longer the trickle down effect lasts in the bullpen.
Aroldis Chapman heading back to the mound, even in a bullpen session, is great news. We won’t fully know how he will be until he gets on the mound against live batters, but it’s encouraging that he will be throwing off of a mound in the next few days.
