Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Starting Pitching Match Up

A new series that we will be doing every gameday will be where we preview the upcoming game’s starting pitchers. Today is the first game of the year, but expect many of the previews to look similar to this one.

Cincinnati Reds starter: RHP Johnny Cueto

Cutter 89 MPH 19%
Slider 84 MPH 14%
Change Up 84 MPH 19%
Curveball 76 MPH 1%

Johnny Cueto works off of his fastball and cutter as he mixes in his slider and change up. About once a game he will fire a curveball up there as well. He can throw strikes, generates a good amount of groundballs and will work all four quadrants of the strikezone.

St. Louis Cardinals starter: RHP Adam Wainwright

Scouting Report

Pitch Velocity Usage
Fastball 92 MPH 40%
Cutter 89 MPH 29%
Change Up 85 MPH 3%
Curveball 76 MPH 28%

Adam Wainwright also works off of his fastball and cutter. If you count the cutter as a fastball, then he is basically a two pitch pitcher as his change up is basically just a show-me pitch that he uses only a few times per game. He relies on his curveball, one of the best in the game, as his out pitch. He shows strong control and above-average groundball tendencies.
