Bryan Price stated earlier this evening that Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco may not be ready to begin the season. Local radio host Lance McAllister had this note on twitter:
Price: Mesoraco- he’s going to need a little bit more time. We are leaning strongly toward putting him on the DL and doing short rehab.#Reds

If Mesoraco does indeed head to the disabled list, even if it it just for a few days as he can be retroactively added to the last day he played in a game, it likely means that both Neftali Soto and Tucker Barnhart will be on the Reds opening day roster. Barnhart is an outstanding defender behind the plate and a switch hitter, though from the right side of the plate he has struggled for most of his career in the minor leagues. Soto would still likely remain as an emergency catcher and be used more as a pinch hitter, but did look good in his lone spring training game behind the plate.
Mesoraco being on the disabled list would make for EIGHT players to begin the year on the disabled list for the Reds. I don’t know that eight would be a record, but it has to be close.
