BRM's Nominee for BBA's Stan Musial Award: Andrew McCutchen

Pirates outfielder was runaway favorite on staff ballots.

The last of our Baseball Bloggers Alliance award nominees is for the Stan Musial Award which is presented to the NL’s top player. The vote wasn’t as close as I thought it would be. In a season that had a handful of players put his name to the top of the list, in the end, it came down to…

Andrew McCutchen – Pittsburgh Pirates

Maybe the staff voted for Cutch because of the many times we got to see him this past season, but it’s hard to deny that he was a driving force behind the Pirates run to the playoffs this past season.

McCutchen compiled a triple slash of .317/.404/.508 with 21 home runs, 84 RBI and stole 27 bags. He ranked him 7th in batting average, 3rd in OBP , 6th in SLG, 6th in steals. His OPS of .911 was also 6th in the National League and his adjusted OPS+ of 158 was 2nd. He also ranked 6th in runs scored with 97.

Cutch’s bWAR of 8.2 was third among all NL players (Clayton Kershaw and Carlos Gomez, 8.4), while his fWAR of 8.2 was tops.

Defensively, McCutchen tied for the NL among center fielders with 11 assists and was tops in RZR (.952).

McCutchen also reached a milestone during the 2013 season…
