Reports surfaced today that the Reds are not only planning to shop Brandon Phillips this off-season but that the team fully intends to trade the Gold Glove second baseman.
Blog Red Machine’s Steve Engbloom handed out Brandon Phillips’ grade for the 2013 year just three days ago. However, the Reds interest in parting ways with Phillips could be due to more than just his performance on the field.
Phillips ruffled some feathers in two separate incidents this past season. Phillips’ comments in July regarding his “slap in the face” contract, which pays him $72.5 million, didn’t sit well with Reds fans or CEO Bob Castellini. Later in the season, Phillips and Reds beat reporter C. Trent Rosecrans had a verbal beef in the locker room regarding tweets questioning Phillips’ on-base percentage.
With the World Series teams yet to even be determined the off-season has yet to really get into full swing. At the conclusion of the Fall Classic when teams start to really make roster changes and moves this will be something that Reds fans will want to keep their eyes out for as I’m sure rumors will continue to swirl whether the Reds trade Phillips or not.
