Braves v Reds - 5/7: Pitchers, Lineups

Game two tonight and the Reds must won this one if they hope to claim the series in tomorrow’s finale.

Speaking of tomorrow’s game (and yes, I’m aware this is to be about tonight’s game), MLB Network will carry it in the Cincinnati market. I would say to check your service provider, but something tells me you already know what channel MLBN is.

So, about tonight’s game. Both starters have run into a bit of bad luck this season. It is that apparent once you see their numbers.

Starting Pitchers

Braves – Kris Medlen
2013: 1-4, 3.38 ERA, 1.366 WHIP (6 games/starts)
@ GABP: 0-0, 5.14 ERA, 1.429 WHIP (4 games, 1 start)
v. Reds: 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 1.500 WHIP (5 games, 1 start)
Last v. Reds: 7/30/2010 (ND) – 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, BB, 4 SO

Medlen’s record is hardly indicative of how he’s pitched this season. In his six starts, he’s allowed more than three runs only once (4/27 v. Detroit). In his last outing, the Nationals did dent him for three runs over seven innings.

He’s dropped his last three decisions and hasn’t won since April 9th.

Reds – Homer Bailey
2013: 1-3, 3.38 ERA, 1.179 WHIP (6 games/starts)
@ GABP: 19-19, 4.90 ERA, 1.459 WHIP (63 games/starts)
v. Braves: 2-0, 2.41 ERA, 1.125 WHIP (3 games/starts)
Last v. Braves: 5/24/2012 (W) – 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 SO

If Bailey never has to step a foot in St. Louis again, all would be well. His two games there have been horrendous (10.1 IP, 18 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 4 HR), but his four outings away from there have been extremely good (27 IP, 16 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 30 SO, 0 HR). Tonight’s game isn’t in St. Louis.

Homer hasn’t posted a W since his first start of the season which came on April 5th.

Not sure I get all the lefties Dusty has in tonight’s lineup. If LHB had success against Medlen, I would be all for it, but Medlen is better against LHB both for this year and his career.

I know Todd Frazier is slumping and that’s probably why he’s not starting. Devin Mesoraco has played in the last four games (three starts) and is a cool 2-for-13 in those games. Possibly why he’s sitting. I wonder if writing “L” on the scorecard for three consecutive players will cause issues.
