Reds v Nats – 4/25/13: Pitchers and Lineups

The Good Guys head to our nation’s capital. Tonight’s game is also the free game on MLB.tv. All you need is an account for MLB.com in order to watch provided you’re not subject to the MLB blackout rules.

Onward…

When the Nationals visited GABP earlier this month, neither of tonight’s starters factored into that series which saw the Reds take the series, 2-1. The lone loss the Reds absorbed in those three games was an extra-innings affair in which Cincy was down 7-3 entering the bottom of the 8th. That was also the last game in which Shin-Soo Choo homered. He’s been all right since then, I think.

Probable Starting Pitchers

Reds – Bronson Arroyo
2013: 2-1, 3.54 ERA, 0.964 WHIP in 4 starts
v. WAS: 3-3, 3.92 ERA, 1.200 WHIP in 11 games, all starts
@ Nationals Park: 0-1, 2.11 ERA, 0.938 WHIP in 3 games, all starts
Last app. v Nats: 5/13/12 (ND) @ GABP – 5 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO

It must be noted that Arroyo also had 2 appearances in the Nationals old home of RFK Stadium. He didn’t fare as well there with an ERA of 6.52 and WHIP of 1.241. Maybe the newness of Nats Park sits better with him. No wins in his three starts, but the other numbers are promising.

Wait. A left-handed hitter struggles against Arroyo? It will happen every now and then and Adam LaRoche seems to be “that guy”.

You may notice the absence of Ryan Zimmerman from this list. That’s because he’s on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. In 30 plate appearances, Zimmerman is 9-for-29 (.310 BA) with 2 RBI.

Nationals – Gio Gonzalez
2013: 1-1, 5.95 ERA, 1.450 WHIP in 4 starts
v. CIN: 1-0, 0.95 ERA, 0.842 WHIP in 3 games, all starts
@ Natioanls Park: 10-5, 2.70 ERA, 1.041 WHIP in 17 games, all starts
Last app. v CIN: 5/11/12 (W) @ GABP – 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 9 SO

The last time Gonzalez saw the Reds, he did manage the win, but in his 5 innings, he tossed 115 pitches with only 66 going for strikes (57.4%). The 9 whiffs did help him.

No current Red owns a round-tripper against Gio. The Reds three lefty bats of Choo, Votto and Bruce have some success against him. That said, Choo hasn’t faced Gonzalez since 2010 and Votto was only 1-for-4 against him in 2012.
