What's Up in the NL Central: 4/2/13

I apologize for no “What’s Up” yesterday, but I have a great excuse. I was watching the Reds. In case you missed my take on what was a 3-1 Reds loss, you can catch it here.

So how did things work out for our NLC foes yesterday? Glad you asked…

Chicago Cubs

Something was amiss in the Cubs lineup: no Darwin Barney. You know, the 2012 NL second base Gold Glove recipient. Seems he’s on the DL.

Although I gotta say, I loved watching Anthony Rizzo launch this.

Kid can hit.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers pulled out a come-from-behind 5-4 win yesterday. It must be noted that the Rockies owned baseball’s worst bullpen last season. I know that’s last year, but apparently some things haven’t changed for the Rox.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Sometimes an Opening Day loss won’t prevent some from having a good time attending an Opening Day. Case in point: Rum Bunter’s Tom Smith tells us of his Opening Day trip to PNC Park.

Maybe the best part was seeing Andrew McCutchen gather some wares.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Redbirds should have expected a loss last evening. After Arizona won 6-2, the D’backs now own 7 straight wins on Opening Day.

Off the NLC Path

– Recall when Cincinnati hosted the Civil Rights Game? Great American Ball Park was the first major league stadium to host the event (two previously were held in Memphis, Tennessee) in 2009 and 2010. The Atlanta Braves and Turner Field had hosted the following two years (’11 and ’12) after GABP.

It was announced today that for 2013, the Chicago White Sox and U.S. Cellular Field will be the designated site and host team. The game will be played on Saturday, August 24 as the Pale Hose take on the Texas Rangers. (MLB.com)
