What's Up in the NL Central: 3/30/13

Some moves are shocking. Some, not so much. A couple have been made in the last 24 hours or so of which one did shock me.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs released Dontrelle Willis so tweets Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune. Can’t say I’m shocked because the Cubbies have bunches of arms. Not all are great, mind you, but there are other options they hold.

Since being granted free agency following the 2011 season, the Cubs represent the third team that has released Willis (Phillies, Orioles, Cubs). Hope the D-Train can latch on somewhere.

Milwaukee Brewers

Once thought to be headed to the bullpen, Mike Fiers is in the Brewers starting rotation with Chris Narveson being sent to the ‘pen for reliever duties. After having read where Fiers might be the odd man out, this surprised me only in that Narveson seemingly had the slightest of edges. Here’s the skinny from Mike Axisa on

I recently stated that Fiers was a cog in the Brewers run late last season. Having him in their rotation as a #4 or #5 makes this rotation sound at the least.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Never realized until I checked MLBTR today, but the Buccos made a slew of off-season moves including former Red farmhand Zach Stewart.

St. Louis Cardinals

Nice read on Adam Wainwright‘s shiny new deal from Marilyn Green of Redbird Rants.
