Never a good time to receive this type of news.
Cincinnati Reds third base coach Mark Berry had been away from the team last week according to Mark Sheldon. It was discovered Berry has cancer in his tonsil and lymph nodes. Berry is unsure if he will opt for treatment or surgery, but he is very optimistic about beating the cancer. The positive is the cancer was caught early and has not spread.
Berry has been in the Reds organization ever since he was taken in the 6th round of the 1984 draft with the 137th overall pick. He has served in a coaching capacity since retiring as a player in 1990. Berry has been a coach with the big club since 1999 and has been its third base coach since 2004.
Please keep Mark and his family in your thoughts.
