Billy Hamilton to Start Year in Louisville

Thanks to BRM’s Pensacola Blue Wahoos correspondent Kourage Kundahl for this…

Per John Fay, Reds GM Walt Jocketty stated that the Reds #1 prospect Billy Hamilton will start the season with the Louisville Bats.

And what will Billy be working on during his time there? Walt tells us.

“He’ll be playing center field and working on his offense and his overall game,” Jocketty said. “He’s going to probably be working on bunting a lot, with his speed. Bunting and running are his two key tools.”

Can’t say I’m completely surprised by this, but I thought there was a chance Hamilton would start the season in Pensacola for at least a few games before making the move to Louisville. Acclimate himself a little more for the defensive switch than the offense.

That said, I know Bats fans can’t get to Louisville Slugger Field fast enough (pun intended) to watch Hamilton live. Hamilton will also be reunited with former Blue Wahoos skipper Jim Riggleman.

Jocketty added this…

“We’ve got Choo for this year, and then we’ll see.”

That might be as big an endorsement one might garner from Jocketty. He’s as tight-lipped as anyone and plays matters so close to the vest it’s a wonder he can breathe. He’s not revealing his hand, nor should he.

I think we know what he and the Reds hold in this hand though.

Hamilton did play center field in the Arizona Fall League and the process of having him play center and be the future leadoff guy for the Reds continues. Last year, Hamilton swiped a record 155 bases while posting a triple slash of .311/.410/.420 with stints in Bakersfield and Pensacola.
