Earlier today, Minor League BaseballTM announced that the Dayton Dragons have been selected the winner of the 2012 John H. Johnson President’s Award. The award is presented annually to the top minor league organization of all organizations that are classified as Single-A, Double-A or Triple-A. It is an award that signifies the most complete organization within the minors.
There are a number of factors that are considered. Among those are the stability of the franchise and contributions to the community and league. The Dragons certainly rate high in those areas. Just one facet of reaching out to the surrounding community is that the Dragons have a concessions program which nonprofit organizations man the concession stands. From that program alone, almost $4 million has been raised for nonprofits.
And talk about stability, the most dominant feat surrounding the Dragons has been their sellout streak which currently sits at 913 games. Since Fifth Third Field opened in 2000, the Dragons have set attendance records on four occasions.
And these are just two examples of how the Dragons have had an extremely positive influence on the Dayton and surrounding community. They honestly do much, much more.
If you have ever attended, a Dragons game or even been in contact with anyone within the Dragons organization, this is of little surprise to you. They were listed by Forbes as the minor league’s 8th most valued franchise. The Dragons were also nominated for the Best Sports Team by the Sports Business Daily/Journal earlier this year. While they didn’t take home the top prize then, they are being rewarded now. And justifiably so.
If you haven’t been to a Dayton Dragons game, you honestly need to go, but getting a ticket could prove to be a little difficult. That sellout streak. Fifth Third Field is a facility that is clearly first-rate among all minor league stadiums. The Dragons staff has numerous events that take place between innings. Heater, Gem and Roofman provide even more entertainment. Oh, Roofman? Got to go to find out. It is truly an evening the entire family can and will enjoy.
The award will be presented during the Winter Meetings.
Blog Red Machine extends its hearty congratulations to the Dayton Dragons for being recognized as the minor’s best organization. A well deserved honor, indeed.
