Dan Patrick Spends Time With Joseph Votto

I had the good fortune to stumble on an interview Dan Patrick conducted today with our own Joey Votto.  As always, I find Joey has a great sense of humor with an intelligent quick wit.  The interview ranged from a brief discussion of Canadian national hero Wayne Gretsky to questioning how a second baseman could turn on a pitch and hit an opposite field home run…watch out Brandon Phillips… .  This led to an exchange about steroid testing and Joey provided an up close and personal view of the entire procedure and the intimate relationship he has with his testing personnel.  That is why he gets paid the big bucks.

The most fascinating exchange occurred when Patrick mentioned he had the Reds winning the NL Central this year and he asked Joey if this was a safe bet.  Joey answered by saying he thought the Reds would win but then said “Those Pirates…they are awfully pesky.  Holy Cow!”  He went on to mention the Cardinals and the tangible absence of Albert Pujols.  Dan said they still seem to be a great team without him but Joey reminded him of “watching him (Albert) destroy…everyone”.  Well I can’t speak for Dan but it is a painfully clear memory for me as well.

Dan also asked Joey when he will become too old for his nickname and will need to be referred to as Joe.  Joey said his dad is Joe and there may come a time when he is forced to grow up and go by Joseph.  Dan ended the discussion by saying “Well Joseph its good to visit with you and continue the good season and thank you for not testing positive.”  Joey, tongue firmly planted in cheek, replied “Thank you Daniel.”
