Bakersfield Blaze Have 5 Tabbed for California League All Star Game

Reds Advanced Class A affiliate Bakersfield Blaze have 5 players honored with selection to the California League All Star Game and 3 will be able to participate in the game.

Among those honored are 3 pitchers, lets meet them:

Tony Cingrani, left handed starting pitcher now with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, completed his brief stay in Bakersfield with a 5-1 record and an ERA of 1.11 over 56.2 innings.  He allowed just 13 walks while striking out 71 batters and had a WHIP of 0.92.

Chad Rogers has also been tabbed to represent the Blaze.  Chad is a right handed starter with a 4-2 record and an ERA of 2.33 over 73.1 innings.  He has walked 14 batters while striking out 55 batters faced.  He has a WHIP of 1.06.

Closer Brian Pearl is the final pitching representative recognizing his 12 saves so far in 27 appearances.  The righthander has an ERA of 1.38 and a WHIP of .98.  He has allowed 8 walks and 37 strikeouts over 37.1 innings of work.

In addition the Blaze have 2 position players that have been selected.

Donald Lutz will be unable to appear due to fouling a ball off of his foot and moving to the DL on May 26th.  In spite of this, he leads the entire Reds Minor League in doubles, home runs and slugging percentage.  This in a year where they are gradually teaching the 23 year old how to play in left field after signing Joey Votto to a long term contract.  The most amazing fact about Lutz is he was first introduced to the game of baseball just 8 years ago in Germany.  As good as he is, this young man looks like he will continue to grow and learn.

Last but not least, we present switch hitting Billy Hamilton, slated to be the starting shortstop for the California League squad who will face the Carolina League team next week on June 19th.  I have spent a lot of time highlighting Billy’s accomplishments but lets revisit a few of them.  He currently has 73 stolen bases plus a team leading 114 total bases (1 more than Lutz but Billy has appeared in 17 more games).  Billy has scored 56 runs and has 21 extra base hits.  Not bad for a guy who only had 30 extra base hits all last season.  He is batting at a .321 clip and has an impressive .407 OBP.

Congratulations to all five of these players.  We look forward to more of each of your exploits!
