Three days ago, I received an e-mail from Brian Miller, Editor of FanSided’s Miami Dolphins site, Phin Phanatic. It was a touching message about one of his staff writers names Chris Leeuw who happens to reside in nearby Indianapolis. Here’s the story…
Two years ago, Chris, who loves water skiing, was on the negative side of a freak accident. As a result, Chris was not expected to walk again. There was also the expectation that Chris would be unable to type (therefore contribute to Phin Phanatic). In essence, Chris had lost his motor skills.
Brian made the decision to keep Chris on staff. Then, one day out of the blue, Chris submitted a post. Then, others came.
After two years, Chris is able to walk again. Through support from his mother and his family, Chris is up and moving. While it’s not the pace he was once able to move, it’s a giant step in a positive direction.
Tomorrow, Chris will be taking his efforts a step beyond…literally. An extra mile, if you will. Chris will be taking part of the Christopher Reeve’s Foundation mini-race at this year’s Kentucky Derby. He will attempt to walk a full mile with the assistance of a bionic machine that wraps around his leg to stimulate the muscles to walk.
Chris has set a goal of raising $1,000, a modest goal. In checking the number of followers Blog Red Machine has on Twitter, we should be able to more than cover this goal of $1,000. Each of us donate $1 and Chris will by far exceed his goal.
To donate, simply go here to Supporting Chris Leeuw. They accept MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Discover and PayPal. If you would like to keep abreast of Chris and his “journey”, you can go to Caring Bridge.
I have started the ball rolling…
