Latos Debut Today

by Reds

The Reds will visit the Seattle mariners Spring Training camp today in preseason action and the game will feature the Reds debut of both Mat Latos and Andrew Brackman as well as the reintroduction of Brett Tomko.  Latos is slated to pitch the first two innings followed by Tomko and the statuesque Brackman versus the Mariners featuring ace starter Felix Hernandez

As ever in Spring Training the focus for pitchers is more on the work and building endurance, but it will still be a lot of fun seeing these new additions to the Reds roster take their turns on the mound.

Latos joins the Reds following the blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres and while some writers suggest the Reds gave too much for his talents, surrendering 4 players – Edinson Volquez, Yonder Alonso, Bradley Boxberger and Yasmani Grandal, Reds fans see the potential of a true tandem of aces at the top of the Reds rotation.

Tomlin comes full circle after being part of the trade that brought Ken Griffey to Cincinnati from Seattle and has moved to points across the league to return to Cincinnati 12 years later hoping for a chance at the 2012 roster.  He appears to be a darkhorse to make the team but if he does it would add another veteran presence to the Reds roster.

Brackman comes to his hometown Reds after the New York Yankees gave up on the 1st round draft pick.  He has the tools to be a major league pitcher and the hope is a return to friendly surroundings will allow him to reclaim that mantle and put his massive 6’10″ frame into the position to menace big league hitters.

I will be tweeting during the game @JohnHeitz so stay tuned and say hello!
