Dragon Tales: National Recognition for Hometown Heroes

The season has faded away now and the process for players of rejuvenating the body and spirit before summer fades into the 2012 season and more fun in the sun.  Congratulations are in order for the Quad City River Bandits who after a stellar season closed the deal on a league championship defeating the Lansing Lugnuts who had already vanquished the Dayton Dragons.

Since the season’s end 3 Dragons players have received significant recognition reflecting past success and future promise.

Tucker Barnhart was named recipient of the Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove award for a catcher.  He was singled out as the best defensive catcher in all of minor league baseball with this recognition.

Baseball America published their end of season league by league prospect review and named Billy Hamilton and Daniel Corcino among the MidWest Leagues top 20 prospects.  Hamilton’s blazing speed and improving presence at the plate earned him the #2 ranking while Corcino checked in at #16 for his high strikeout to walk ratio and his effectiveness throughout the season.

In addition, Hamilton and Closer Drew Hayes were both included on the 13 man end of season all star squad selected by the league.

Now here is the part that requires reader involvement.  The MidWest League is selecting a number leaguewide awards with fan help.  7 Dragons are on the ballot just go to http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/awards/y2011/momentoftheyear.jsp Included in the videos to watch you will have the opportunity to see Hamilton’s blazing speed as he completes and inside the park home run under the Homer category.  He is also a choice for best Class A game honored for his 100th stolen base.  When I voted for this I was surprised he has received just 3% of the votes, his problem is voters are choosing a best game award and his is a season long accomplishment I think.  Daniel Renken was also nominated in the category for his performance in June striking out 14 batters, 10 in a row.  Other Dragons to consider voting for include Drew Hayes for Best Reliever and Josh Smith for best Starter.

Please follow the link and vote for these future Reds prospects!
