Think that’s a bit too negative? Maybe, but it can’t be stated enough. The Reds remaining July schedule is critical. Couple that with the remaining schedules for the three teams they are chasing in the NL Central (once you get a look which I will provide) and it makes this 10 game homestand even more critical.
We’ve done a couple of posts over the past week or so referencing schedules. Yo might be thinking that first things first, the Reds gotta win. Completely agree, but we also have to have one eye on those within the division that are ahead of the Reds in the standings. It’s actually a scoreboard watching at this point, I know. Since we’d rather the Reds just win games and not worry about the other teams (you know, the line we hear from players at this time, but you know it’s not completely 100% true), we as fans may choose this route.
So what’s the road ahead ook like for the top four teams in the NL Central? Here’s your the look I promised.
|ATL (3)||@SF (3)||STL (3)||@PIT (3)|
|NYM (4)||CHI (3)||@ATL (4)||HOU (4)|
|SF (3)||HOU (3)||@PHI (3)||CHI (3)|
By looking at this, you can see that the Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates have tough roads for the remainder of July…especially the Pirates. The Cardinals and Brewers have the opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the division since both play the Cubs and the Astros. While those two series are going on, the Reds will get the Mets (who aren’t bad) and the defending champion Giants. The Pirates travel to Philly and Atlanta. The potential for St. Louis and Milwaukee to create a little separation from Cincy and Pittsburgh clearly exists. For the Reds and Pirates to keep up, they must play their best ball of the season to date.
A quick look ahead to August starts with a bang. Right out of the gate, the Cards and Brewers will square off. And don’t think that means everything for the division should one team sweep the other. That’s what happened in Cincinnati last season. We know how the rest of the season transpired.
No, not bragging or puffing up my chest there. That clearly falls under “just sayin’”.
