Roster Moves Not What You Thought

There was much speculation today in regards to roster moves that Reds GM Walt Jocketty was making today. Here’s what is known…

1. Daniel Ray Herrera was claimed off waivers. The team that is thought to have claimed D Ray is the Milwaukee Brewers.

2. According to a tweet from John Fay, both Todd Frazier and Matt Maloney were observed in Philadelphia. Both have been recalled from Louisville. The guessing game is who goes…

3. Mark Sheldon tweeted that he saw Edgar Renteria leave the clubhouse early yesterday. There is still some conjecture on his absence as to whether Renteria has left the team voluntarily or there is a pressing family issue he must attend to.

4. Fay also tweets that both Jordan Smith and Edinson Volquez have been called into the office of one Dusty Baker. I would think that would be worse than going to see the principal considering the last five games. That would lead you to believe that both are being sent down. Such was tweeted by the Reds.

5. At this point, it appears that Dontrelle Willis will not be the occupant of Herrera’s spot on the 40-man as he was placed on the DL. Louisville Bats voice Matt Stevens offered this to Lance McAlister after Bats skipper Rick Sweet told Stevens.

6. So who is the recipient of D Ray’s former spot on the 40-man roster? Pitcher Chad Reineke is considered as an option. And I think I’m going to throw in the name of Dave Sappelt here, too. Actually, I’d like that…a lot!

To add to this saga of moves were various rumors that the Reds had made a trade and that Jonny Gomes was released. I’ve not seen nor heard a single thing that is considered as solid to lead me to think one or both have occurred. That being said, we know Walt likes to keep things close to the vest and when the time is right, Jocketty (or someone within the Reds organization) will make the appropriate announcement.

If some other moves happen, and the Reds struggle even more, this is going to be considered a bad panic move by Jocketty and the Reds. I hope these are the right moves. All names being sent down and rumored to be released are all not getting the job done right now, so it can only get better right? One would hope.

Good or bad I don’t think this will be viewed as a panic move. Things needed to change and Volquez performance can not be viewed as acceptable. He has not had a single game this season where you could sit back and suggest he was carrying his weight as a member of the rotation let alone the Ace. I have heard some suggest he kept the Reds close enough to allow for a couple of wins but in truth he has just 2 quality starts and in both of those he went the minimum 6 innings and gave up the maximum of 3 earned runs. The other rumor I heard today was that Gomes was reassured he is going no where yet. But you must believe that if Frazier begins to have success Gomes’ window of opportunity will be forced shut. Today was a fun day to watch twitter!

I don;t believe the panic button has been pushed…yet. There should be at least a slight sense of urgency, and maybe these moves will give a signal to the rest of the roster. If you’re Opening Day starter can be sent out, well, you could be next…

Funny how we all see things differently. Curt is concerned that this could be a panic move, where I would say it is needed and slightly overdue. I thought Volquez should have gone down two starts ago.

I said this could be seen as a panic move, by the fans. But I also said that everyone sent down deserved to be sent down. I just want to see a win sometime soon before this spirals out of control. And that Frazier guy sucks, kidding.

Sorry bro. Guess I read more into it than what you meant.
