The Cardinals have 10 games remaining in their season. In order for the Cards to come back and win the NL Central, they would have to win at least 8 of their last ten and for the Reds to lose all of their last 9. An extremely tall order for any club to overcome. If the Reds go 3-6 for the last part of the season, they still win the NL Central.
Cincy begins a three game set in a couple of hours and the Cards have already disposed of the Cubs today. The Reds can take care of their own business before returning to Cincinnati with a sweep at Petco Park. That’s something the Cardinals can do nothing about. The only thing standing in their way is the Padres who are fighting for their postseason life.
The biggest issue for the Reds at this point is to get on a bit of a roll entering the playoffs. September has not been kind so far, but a sweep in San Diego would be a great way to end the road portion of the schedule. Taking two of three would work just fine as well. It’s been a while since the Reds have won a series. If they can win the last three of the season, it should place them on that roll.
But in the bigger picture, the Reds would like that #2 seed. They would have home field advantage for the NLDS and if the #1 seed Phillies (you have to give it to them at this point) lose in their NLDS series, Cincinnati would gain home filed for the NLCS.
Much to gain and lose going down the stretch.
